2 Classical Music Concerts to See in N.Y.C. This Weekend

Our guide to the city’s best classical music and opera happening this weekend and in the week ahead.

HERE AND NOW FESTIVAL at Bargemusic (Aug. 31, 8 p.m.; Sept. 1, 6 p.m.; Sept. 2, 4 p.m.). Labor Day weekend always offers little in the way of classical concerts, but the one exception worth noting is Bargemusic’s annual festival of contemporary music. The programs differ somewhat, but each night you can hear music by Peri Mauer, Gerard Schwarz, David Taylor and Daniel Schnyder. On Friday their music is joined by that of Yoriaki Matsudaira, and on Saturday and Sunday by that of Daron Hagen.

PETER SERKIN at Music Mountain in Falls Village, Conn. (Sept. 2, 3 p.m.). If you’re escaping north of the city, visit a series that claims to be the oldest continuing summer chamber music festival in the country, in action since 1930. Peter Serkin, the rigorous and enlightening pianist, joins the wind players Jihyun Kim, Caitlin Beare, Claire Worsey and Adam Romey for music by Bach, Mozart and Beethoven.
